The most effective way to fix sun-damaged skin is to start early and prevent it. Using SPF lotions is highly effective, along with daily cover up containing UV coverage. Without having to jump right away into expensive, elaborate treatments, medicated topical treatments are available either over the counter or through a dermatologist. Many medicated treatments contain collagen, and other acids that have smoothing effects on the skin and wrinkles such as alpha hydroxy acids. These alpha hydroxy acids include both glycolic acid and lactic acid.
Sun damaged skin treatments include options including topical creams, chemical peels, and filler treatments. Chemical peels can become quite costly, and time consuming, whilst topical creams and ointments work- they just are not the quick fixes that laser treatments are. There is more time involved in the topical cream approach, but it does work through the use of collagen-boosted ointments. The collagen infused in the ointments actually helps plump the skin allowing for the skin to fill in its wrinkled sun damaged skin to its original youthful appearance. One of the most popular creams available on the market today is created by Garnier Nutrioniste.
Other forms of treatment for sun-damaged skin are the use of chemical peels. Chemical peels actually remove to upper layer of the skin allowing for regrowth. For chemical peels, there are two options: a superficial peel and then a deeper peel into the dermis. Deeper peels produce the best outcome, but at the same time may cause pigmentation damage and also the possibility of superficial scarring. It is important that if you choose this method of repair that you properly research the doctor performing the procedure. Many times a more superficial peel is all that is needed. This allows the skin to still look it's best naturally without the possibility of permanent scarring.
Other options for repair to sun damaged skin is the option of skin fillers or that of BOTOX® Cosmetic. These are focused more around specific point in the face, usually in the creased lines around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. Usually this form of treatment is well tolerated in most patients without any discomfort. The results last as long as six months. For BOTOX® Cosmetic however, it is not intentionally used for sun-damaged skin, but more for the wrinkles caused by age, or premature wrinkles caused by sun damage. The results are similar to that of Restylane® or Hylaform®.
